Living in the Hayhurst neighborhood in Portland, Oregon
Hayhurst has a quieter, more spacious feel than many Portland neighborhoods. Mature trees, winding streets, and homes on generous lots give parts of it an almost rural character, while Pendleton Park and nearby Gabriel Park offer plenty of room to get outside.
Multnomah Village and Hillsdale are close by for coffee, restaurants, and everyday errands.
NEIGHOBRHOOD FAVORITES
Pendelton Park: Set right beside Hayhurst Elementary in the middle of the neighborhood, this is an easy spot for a playground visit, a picnic, or a game on the fields. The giant rabbit sculpture gives it a memorable local landmark.
The Coffee Shop: A fun cafe just west of Hayhurst on Scholls Ferry Road, with coffee, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches and tacos. It’s an easy stop before errands or for breakfast on the weekends.
Maplewood Coffee & Tea (nearby): A hidden park sandwiched between two dead end roads with a large field, playground, and walking path through the woods.
Gabriel Park: 89 acres that include sports fields, summer and winter dog parks, pickleball courts, miles of walking trails, a skate park, and huge playground.
Steeplejack Pizza & Beer: A relaxed stop for pizza and locally brewed beer on Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway. The (not so secret) downstairs arcade makes it especially handy for a casual outing with little ones.
Southwest Community Center: The local hub for fitness, classes, indoor recreation, and a large indoor pool with both lap swimming and kids play with a large water slide and splash pad area.
REAL ESTATE
Hayhurst’s housing is largely mid-century, with ranches, daylight ranches, and split-level homes tucked along winding streets. Lots are often generous and shaded by mature trees, though you’ll also find smaller original homes, larger custom houses, and some newer construction. The variety gives buyers a choice between a classic 1950s home and something more recently built, often with more outdoor space than they might expect in Portland.
A brand new large housing development is underway what was previously Alpenrose Dairy. It’s on the edge of the neighborhood and won’t change the current feel of Hayhurst, but it will add around 250 more homes that are more of a consistent suburban feel with smaller lots and efficient modern floor plans.
